Cambridge Window Frame Painting Services
Timber Sash Frames
Victorian and Edwardian sash windows are found throughout Newnham, Romsey, Cherry Hinton, and Chesterton. Original sash windows have multiple glazing bars, box frames, and hidden weight channels — they require careful hand painting to preserve function.
We paint around every glazing bar with a consistent brush line. Sashes are moved during the painting process so all exposed surfaces are coated and no sections are trapped by dried paint.
Original timber in Cambridge’s Victorian sash windows can be 120 years old. We check for rot, failed putty, and paint build-up in the glazing rebate on survey — soft sections are consolidated or replaced before painting begins.
Casement Windows
Casement windows appear in Cambridge properties from 1900s Edwardian homes through to recent Trumpington and CB1 new builds. The hinge mechanism and opening edge require careful treatment: paint in the wrong places causes sticking and seal failure.
We mask glass, paint frames in full, and check that all casements open and close freely before leaving. Weather seals are masked and protected throughout.
uPVC Repainting
uPVC replacement windows in Cambridge are typically white or cream. Owners refreshing exterior colour schemes often want frames painted to match updated fascias, doors, or render colours.
We clean and degrease uPVC thoroughly, apply a specialist primer rated for plastics, and finish with a flexible exterior coating that handles thermal expansion. Standard decorator’s paint is not suitable for uPVC.
Fascias, Soffits, and Sills
Fascias, soffits, and window sills are the first exterior woodwork to show paint failure. They are exposed to full weather on Cambridge homes and need quality coatings applied over a sound surface.
We sand, fill any cracks, and apply a flexible exterior primer before finishing. Overhanging soffits are coated on the underside as well as the face — sills are back-primed where replacement is required alongside a repaint.
Preparation and Priming
Window frame painting fails at the preparation stage, not the finishing stage. Flaking paint, failed putty, and bare timber left unprimed all cause early failure regardless of topcoat quality.
We treat every window frame as a preparation job first. Loose paint is scraped back, putty is checked and replaced where failed, and bare timber receives an oil-based exterior primer. Any wet or damaged sections are flagged before we start.

How Our Window Frame Painting Works
1. Survey
We check every frame for rot, paint failure, failed putty, and any sashes or casements that are stuck. We identify which frames need preparatory work before painting.
2. Preparation
Loose or flaking paint is removed. Putty is replaced where failed. Rot is treated or soft sections are cut out and filled. Timber knots are sealed with knotting solution before primer is applied.
3. Masking
Glass is masked with tape. Surrounding brickwork, render, and walls are protected with dust sheets. Ironmongery is removed or masked.
4. Priming
Bare timber receives a full oil-based exterior primer. Previously painted surfaces in sound condition receive a light sand and prime. uPVC frames receive a specialist plastic primer.
5. Finishing
Two coats of exterior paint or specialist coating are applied. Sashes are repositioned between coats for full coverage. All casements are tested for free movement before we leave.
Window Frame Painting Costs in Cambridge
Prices below are estimates. Call 01223 912776 for a precise quote.
A standard front elevation with four or five windows typically costs between £600 and £1,200 — that includes fascias and soffits on a Cambridge period terrace. Detached homes in Great Shelford or Histon with larger window counts run from £1,200 to £2,500 for a full exterior woodwork package.

Condition
Frames with failed putty, rot treatment requirements, or heavy paint stripping add preparation time to every window. The condition of the existing surface is the biggest cost variable.
Frame Type
Sash windows with multiple glazing bars and box frames take longer than plain casements. Large bay window frames add time per elevation.
Scope
Adding fascias, soffits, sills, and exterior doors to a window frame job costs more but reduces the number of separate visits needed.
