Radiator Painting in Cambridge

Radiator painting in Cambridge by Cambridge Decorators, interior open-plan living space with fresh finish

Cambridge Decorators are radiator painters covering Victorian terraces, Edwardian villas, and modern homes throughout Cambridge, from period cast iron in Newnham to steel panel radiators in Trumpington new builds.

  • Cast iron radiators: original period features in Victorian and Edwardian homes
  • Steel panel radiators: modern flat-panel units in new builds and refurbished homes
  • Column radiators: freestanding and wall-mounted, painted to match room schemes
  • Heat-resistant finishes: specialist coatings rated to 100 degrees Celsius and above
  • Colour matching: Farrow and Ball, Little Greene, and trade paint ranges

We’ve painted radiators in hundreds of Cambridge homes. We use heat-resistant coatings applied properly, so the finish holds up through repeated heating cycles rather than yellowing or peeling within a year.

Cast Iron Radiators

Original cast iron radiators are a feature of Victorian and Edwardian homes across Newnham, Romsey, and Cherry Hinton. They have complex profiles, multiple sections, and decades of paint built up in the grooves.

We strip or sand back to sound material before applying heat-resistant primer. Each section is painted individually to avoid drips pooling in the grooves. A properly painted cast iron radiator in a Romsey Victorian terrace can last five to eight years before it needs refreshing.

Steel Panel Radiators

Modern steel panel radiators in Trumpington and CB1 homes are often painted in the original builder’s white. Owners refreshing colour schemes want their radiators to match the new wall and woodwork colours.

We sand back the factory finish, apply an adhesion primer, and finish with two coats of heat-resistant paint in the chosen colour. The flat panel surface gives a clean result when the preparation is done right.

Column Radiators

Column radiators, both original period units and reproduction designs installed in Cambridge renovations, combine a decorative profile with practical heating. They are a focal point in many rooms.

We treat column radiators with the same detail work as cast iron. Primer is applied to each column and rail before finishing coats, and colour matching to wall or woodwork colours is standard.

Heat-Resistant Paint

Standard decorator’s paint fails on radiators. It softens under heat, discolours with regular use, and starts to peel within months on surfaces that reach 70 to 80 degrees Celsius.

We use specialist heat-resistant coatings rated to 100 degrees Celsius and above. These are available in a full range of colours and finishes, including satin and eggshell, not only white.

Colour Matching

Cambridge homeowners choose colour carefully. Academics in Newnham and Romsey regularly specify Farrow and Ball or Little Greene shades to coordinate radiators with walls, woodwork, and floors.

We match existing schemes or help choose radiator colours that work with the wider room palette. Samples are brought on survey so you can check under your lighting before committing.

How We Paint Radiators

1. Survey

We check every radiator, note the material, condition, and existing paint type. We identify units with heavy build-up or corrosion that need additional preparation.

2. Isolation

We switch radiators off at the valve and allow them to cool fully before starting. Work is done at ambient temperature only.

3. Preparation

Existing paint is sanded or stripped back to a sound base. Rust spots on steel units are treated. Cast iron grooves are cleaned out before priming. Surrounding floors and walls are protected.

4. Priming

Bare metal or stripped surfaces receive a heat-resistant primer. Previously painted surfaces in sound condition receive an adhesion prime and light sand.

5. Finishing

Two coats of heat-resistant finish are applied with adequate cure time between coats. The finish is checked in raking light before we leave.

Radiator Painting Costs in Cambridge

Radiator Type

A standard steel panel radiator costs between £80 and £150 to paint, including preparation and two finish coats. Original cast iron radiators with complex profiles typically run from £150 to £300 per unit depending on size and condition.

Cast iron column and multi-section radiators take significantly longer than flat steel panels. Profile complexity determines how much hand brush work is required.

Condition and Preparation

Radiators with heavy old paint build-up or surface rust require additional preparation before primer can be applied. We assess condition on survey and include any extra preparation time in the written quote.

Colour

Standard colours cost the same as bespoke shades. Farrow and Ball and Little Greene tinted heat-resistant paint is available and priced into the quote from the start.

Painting radiators alongside a full room redecoration is more efficient than a standalone visit. Call 01223 912776 to arrange a visit and written quote.
