Masonry Painters in Cambridge

Cambridge Decorators are masonry painters working on rendered walls, exposed brick, stone facades, and exterior coatings across the city and surrounding villages.
- Rendered walls: sand and cement render, pebbledash, polymer finish
- Exposed brick: colour sealing, re-pointing prep, consolidation
- Stone facades: natural limestone, reconstituted stone, Cambridge buff brick
- Breathable masonry coatings: Keim, Tex-cote, siloxane systems
- Biological growth treatment: algae, lichen, moss prior to any coating
We’ve treated masonry on hundreds of Cambridge properties. Victorian brick terraces in Romsey and Chesterton. Rendered semis in Trumpington and Histon. Stone-faced homes in Great Shelford. We know what each surface needs to hold a finish for the long term.

Cambridge Masonry Painting Services
Rendered Walls
Sand and cement render is common across Cambridge’s 1930s and 1960s stock in Impington, Milton, and parts of Trumpington. These surfaces can crack, stain, and chalk over time.
We clean the render, fill any cracks and open joints with a flexible filler, and apply a masonry stabiliser before coating. This prevents the new paint lifting off unstable surface material.
Pebbledash walls require a thicker application applied in two passes to ensure even coverage across the uneven aggregate surface.
Exposed Brick
Many Cambridge homeowners choose to leave brickwork exposed rather than render or paint it. In Romsey and Chesterton, where Victorian handmade brick is part of the character, this is often the right call.
Where owners do choose to paint or seal exposed brick, we use breathable siloxane-based products that allow the wall to release moisture vapour. Trapping moisture behind an impermeable coating causes spalling, staining, and mortar deterioration.
We address failed mortar joints before any coating work. Painting over compromised pointing leads to water ingress and paint failure within one or two seasons.
Stone Facades
Great Shelford detached homes and some Newnham villas feature natural or reconstituted stone elements. These surfaces are porous and require a dedicated masonry primer before topcoat.
We assess the stone for existing coatings, efflorescence, and biological growth before specifying a product. Some stone facades are best left uncoated and treated with a clear consolidant instead.

Breathable Coatings and Biological Growth Treatment

Breathable Coatings
Breathable coatings are specified where walls retain moisture from ground level or internal humidity. Cambridge’s older clay stock in Romsey and Cherry Hinton was built before damp-proof courses were standard.
We use Keim mineral paint for period properties where the breathability requirement is critical. Siloxane aqueous systems are used on newer render where flexibility and colour retention over 10 to 15 years is the priority.
Breathable does not mean cheap: these systems require clean, stable surfaces and two full application coats to perform as specified.
Biological Growth Treatment
Algae, lichen, and moss accumulate on north-facing walls and under tree canopy. Left untreated, biological growth holds moisture against the masonry and accelerates surface deterioration.
We treat affected areas with a mould treatment, allow full kill-off time, and brush off dead growth before priming. Skipping this step causes any new coating to fail within two seasons as the growth re-establishes beneath the paint film.
How Our Masonry Painting Works
1. Survey
We assess the masonry type, existing condition, and any active moisture or biological growth. We identify areas requiring repair before coating begins.
2. Cleaning
Surfaces are pressure-washed or hand-scrubbed to remove dirt, chalking old paint, and biological matter. Mould treatment is applied where growth is present and allowed adequate dwell time.
3. Repair
Cracks, open joints, and failed areas are filled with appropriate masonry filler. Repointing is flagged where mortar is soft or recessed.
4. Priming
A stabilising primer or masonry conditioner is applied to porous or loose surfaces. Without it, finish coats lift prematurely.
5. Coating
Two full coats of masonry paint or mineral coating are applied with appropriate drying time between each. Edges at windows, soffits, and brickwork junctions are cut in by hand.
6. Inspection
We check coverage, edges, and any areas of repair under different lighting conditions. Touch-ups are completed before we leave the site.

Masonry Painting Costs in Cambridge
Prices below are estimates. Call 01223 912776 for a precise quote.
A mid-terraced house in Romsey or Cherry Hinton typically costs between £800 and £1,400 for full front and rear masonry painting including preparation. A detached home in Great Shelford or Histon with more elevations runs from £1,800 to £3,000.
Surface Condition
Heavy biological growth, cracked render, or multiple layers of chalking paint add preparation time before any new coating goes on.
Access Requirements
First-floor work needs scaffolding or a tower. Cambridge terraces with close boundary walls can limit access and increase setup time.
Product Specification
Breathable mineral coatings such as Keim cost more per litre than standard masonry paint. The performance difference over 15 years justifies the cost for period properties.
