Exterior Painters in Cambridge

Cambridge Decorators are exterior painters covering period terraces, detached homes, and modern new-builds across the city.
- Full outdoor house repaints: the complete exterior from walls to woodwork
- Masonry walls: brick, render, and painted facades
- Windows and woodwork: sash frames, fascias, soffits, and doors
- uPVC and composite surfaces: frames, cladding, and gutters
- Garden walls and outbuildings treated as part of the full exterior scope
We’ve worked on Cambridge exteriors throughout Newnham, Romsey, Chesterton, and the southern villages. Cambridge sits on Jurassic clay, and seasonal ground movement opens hairline cracks at render joints over time. We find them, seal them, and paint over a properly prepared surface.

Masonry and Rendered Walls
Rendered facades appear across Cambridge’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Romsey, Chesterton, and Cherry Hinton. Before painting, we check for structural cracks, hollow areas, and poorly bonded sections. For detailed masonry and render work, see our masonry painting page.
Loose render is hacked back and replastered. Hairline cracks from clay soil movement are filled with flexible exterior filler. Only then do we apply primer and finish.
Windows and Woodwork
Timber sash windows are common across Victorian and Edwardian properties in Cambridge. We strip back to sound timber, patch any rot, prime correctly, and apply durable exterior gloss or satin. For dedicated window frame work, see our window frame painting page. For front doors, see our front door painting page.
Painted sashes are checked to slide freely when we leave. Fascias, soffits, bargeboards, and front doors are treated as part of a coordinated exterior package.
uPVC and Composite Surfaces
uPVC windows, doors, and guttering can be painted with the right primer and preparation. We use specialist primers that bond to the plastic before the finish coat goes on.
Newer properties in Trumpington and CB1 often have composite doors that respond well to a refresh rather than replacement. We advise honestly on expected lifespan before starting.
Fascias, Soffits, and Guttering
Fascias and soffits take significant weathering on east-facing and north-facing elevations. Properly prepared and painted, they protect the roof edge and improve the overall appearance of the property.
We check for rot, replace where needed, and prime all bare timber before applying finish coats. Guttering and downpipes are cleaned before painting to ensure adhesion. For timber fencing, see our fence painting page.
Garden Walls and Outbuildings
Brick boundary walls, gate piers, and outbuildings benefit from the same preparation and care as the main house. Properties in Great Shelford and Histon with larger gardens often have substantial boundary walls worth maintaining properly.
For garden decking, see our deck painting page. For sheds and timber outbuildings, see our shed painting page. For all exterior timber surfaces, see our wood painting page. For combined interior and exterior projects, see our house painting page.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site Assessment
We visit and check every surface, noting existing coating, render condition, and any clay movement cracking. Structural repairs needed before painting are identified at this stage.
2. Surface Preparation
We clean moss, algae, and loose material. Render is repaired where needed. Timber is stripped to sound material. Biological growth is treated and allowed to dwell before rinsing.
3. Priming
Bare timber gets a specialist timber primer. Masonry gets a masonry primer. Rendered surfaces get an exterior stabiliser where condition requires it. The right primer makes the difference between a finish that lasts and one that fails early.
4. Paint Application
Exterior paint needs a dry window of at least 48 hours to cure. We monitor forecasts and plan application phases around Cambridge’s weather. Two finish coats are standard; exposed elevations get a third.
5. Inspection and Touch-Up
Once the final coat has cured, we inspect all surfaces in good light. Touch-ups are completed before we leave, and we walk through the finished work with you before closing the job.

Exterior Painting Costs in Cambridge
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01223 912776 for a precise quote.

Surface Area and Access
A large Newnham villa or Chesterton detached has considerably more wall area than a terraced house. Access requirements also increase with height and roof pitch.
Exterior painting typically costs between £18 and £40 per square metre, including preparation and two finish coats. Total project costs usually fall between £1,400 and £6,000+.
Surface Condition
Render in poor condition needs repair before painting. Timber with rot needs stripping and patching. Clay movement cracking adds preparation time.
A Victorian terrace in Romsey or Cherry Hinton with rendered walls typically costs £1,600 to £2,800 for walls only, plus £400 to £800 for fascias, soffits, and windows.
Paint System
Standard masonry paint is the most economical option. Specialist flexible or breathable systems cost more per litre but perform better on period surfaces where movement is a factor.
An Edwardian semi in Newnham or Chesterton typically costs £2,500 to £4,500 depending on condition. A full exterior with woodwork on a 3-bed Victorian typically runs £2,200 to £4,000 for a well-maintained property.
Cambridge Properties We Paint
Victorian and Edwardian Terraces
Rendered and painted brick terraces throughout Romsey, Cherry Hinton, and Mill Road are among the most common Cambridge exterior jobs. Period properties benefit from breathable coatings that let the walls cycle moisture without trapping it.
Detached and Semi-Detached Homes
Larger detached properties in Newnham, Chesterton, and Grantchester Road often have a mix of masonry, timber, and uPVC that needs coordinating across one job. We specify each surface separately and quote accordingly.
New-Build Properties
Newer homes in Trumpington, CB1, and the southern villages often have render or facing brick that benefits from an early protective coat. We use paint systems appropriate to newer substrates.
Listed and Conservation Area Properties
Several Cambridge streets fall within conservation areas. Changing colour on a listed building or conservation area property may need consent from Cambridge City Council. We can advise on suitable paint systems once permissions are confirmed.
