Cambridge Door Painting Services

Panelled Doors in Period Properties

Victorian and Edwardian panelled doors are found throughout Romsey, Newnham, and Cherry Hinton. These doors have raised mouldings, deep profiles, and original timber that can be over 120 years old.

We hand-paint around every panel and moulding. We use the right brush sizes for each section of the door and maintain clean edges between panels, frames, and walls.

Old-growth timber in Cambridge’s Victorian terraces has often been repainted many times over. We check for paint build-up in the moulding grooves and strip back where needed before priming.

Flush Doors in Modern Homes

Flush doors in CB1 apartments and Trumpington new builds need a factory-smooth finish. Any surface imperfection shows clearly under the bright LED lighting common in modern interiors.

We use a fine foam roller or spray application on flat flush doors. This removes brush marks and gives an even, consistent finish across the full face. Edges and frames are cut in by hand.

Door Frames and Architraves

Frames and architraves are painted as part of every door job. A freshly painted door with tired frames looks unfinished.

We sand frames back, fill any gaps at the wall junction with flexible caulk, and apply a full coat system matching the doors. Hinges and ironmongery are masked carefully.

Fire Doors

Fire doors are heavier and often cannot be removed from their frames. We paint them in place using the correct fire-rated paint system and ensure the intumescent strips are protected throughout.

Wardrobe and Storage Doors

Built-in wardrobes in Cambridge homes — particularly in Newnham villas and Chesterton Victorian terraces — often have fitted doors that need painting alongside the room woodwork.

We paint wardrobe doors, alcove shelving fronts, and cupboard doors as part of a full woodwork refresh. See our wood painting page for the full scope of interior woodwork we cover.

Interior Painting Across Cambridge

Door painting is part of our wider interior painting service. We also cover hallway painting and front door painting for a consistent finish throughout the home.

How Door Painting Works

1. Survey

We visit and check every door. We note the timber type, existing finish, paint build-up, and any damage, and identify which doors need stripping rather than repainting over.

2. Preparation

Hinges, handles, and glass are masked. Frames are filled and sanded. Doors with heavy old paint in the mouldings are stripped to sound material before priming.

3. Priming

Bare timber gets an oil-based primer. Previously painted surfaces in sound condition get a light sand and adhesion primer. MDF flush doors get a specialist MDF edge sealer before priming.

4. Application

Two finish coats are standard. Panelled doors are painted in sections — panels first, then mouldings, then stiles and rails — to avoid lap marks. Flush doors get spray or foam roller application.

5. Inspection

We check each door in raking light before finishing. Touch-ups are done, masking is removed, and we confirm all doors open and close freely before we leave.

Door Painting Costs in Cambridge

Prices below are estimates. Call 01223 912776 for a precise quote.

Single Door Pricing

Single interior doors typically cost £80 to £180 each, including preparation and two finish coats. A hallway with five or six doors usually runs between £400 and £800.

Door Type

Panelled doors with complex mouldings take longer than flat flush doors. Fire doors have additional coating requirements that add to preparation time.

Condition

Doors that need stripping back to timber add preparation time. Sound existing paint just needs a light sand and is quicker to price.

Scope

Painting frames and architraves alongside the doors adds cost but gives a far cleaner result than doors alone. We recommend combining them in a single visit.

Painting doors, frames, skirting, and window sills in one visit is more efficient than separate trips. For full interior woodwork quotes, see our interior painting page.
