Deck Painting Services

Decking Boards

Decking boards take more wear than any other garden timber. Foot traffic, outdoor furniture, rain, and UV exposure all degrade the surface faster than vertical timbers — preparation matters. We sand decking boards before applying any coating, opening the grain and removing greyed surface timber to give the product a proper key. Two coats are standard on bare or significantly weathered boards; previously treated decking in good condition receives a light sand and single refresh coat.

Balustrades and Posts

Balustrades and deck posts are treated as part of every deck job. Posts sit close to the ground and are more vulnerable to moisture than the boards — we check for rot at ground level before treating. Where posts are sound, we apply a preservative base coat and finish to match the deck treatment. Balustrade rails and uprights are included in the same visit.

Steps and Handrails

Deck steps are a high-wear area and the most likely part of a deck to become slippery. We sand steps thoroughly and apply product at the same time as the main deck. For exposed or north-facing steps in Cambridge gardens, we recommend an anti-slip coating as standard. Handrails are finished to match the rest of the deck structure.

Deck Staining and Anti-Slip Finishes

Deck Staining vs Paint

Stain and paint behave differently on decking, and the right choice depends on the timber and its condition. Oil-based penetrating stains work well on sound, natural timber — they soak in, allow the wood to breathe, and do not peel. Solid colour paint works better on older, rougher decking where the grain is not the feature. It covers imperfections but requires more maintenance over time. We advise on the right product during the survey visit.

Anti-Slip Finishes

Cambridge’s climate means decking is wet for a large part of the year. Smooth boards become hazardous in autumn and winter, particularly on shaded north-facing decks in Romsey and Newnham. We apply an anti-slip additive to the top coat on any deck where slip risk is a concern, giving grip underfoot without significantly changing the appearance of the finish.

Exterior Wood Treatment

Treating decking alongside other exterior timber in one visit is more efficient than separate trips. For the full scope of exterior painting services, including fences and outbuildings, see our exterior painting page.

Here’s How It Works

1. Survey

We inspect the full deck — checking boards for rot, lifting nails, and unstable fixings. We note the condition of balustrades, posts, and steps, and identify any boards that need replacing before treatment can start.

2. Preparation

Boards are pressure-washed or brushed down and left to dry. We sand the deck surface thoroughly before coating. Nails and fixings are checked and hammered flush or replaced where they have lifted.

3. First Coat

Product is applied by brush or roller, working with the grain. Posts, balustrades, and handrails are treated at the same time. Steps receive particular attention at this stage.

4. Second Coat

Applied after adequate drying time between coats. On steps and high-use areas, we apply additional product where the coverage warrants it.

5. Inspection

We check coverage across all boards, posts, and handrails. Any drips on paving or adjacent surfaces are cleaned before we leave.

Deck Painting Costs in Cambridge

Prices below are estimates. Call 01223 912776 for a precise quote. Deck treatment typically costs between £4 and £10 per square metre, including preparation and two coats — a typical 20m² deck runs between £80 and £200.

Condition

Heavily weathered or greyed decking needs more sanding and preparation time. Well-maintained boards in good condition cost less to treat.

Complexity

Decks with balustrades, multiple levels, steps, and handrails take longer than a simple flat deck area.

Product Choice

Penetrating stains are straightforward to apply. Solid paint systems on older boards require more preparation to ensure adhesion.

Combined Visits

Treating decking alongside other exterior timber in one visit reduces cost. See our fence painting and wood painting pages for related services.
