Wood Painting Services in Cambridge
Interior Hardwood
Hardwood staircases, floors, and handrails in Cambridge’s Victorian and Edwardian homes are often original and in good structural condition. They need the right treatment to preserve character without looking overworked.
We assess hardwood on survey: species, existing finish type, and wear level. For painted hardwood, we sand back to sound material, prime correctly, and apply a durable finish coat.
For stained or oiled hardwood, we clean and prepare the surface before applying the correct system for that wood type. Staircases in Newnham villas and Chesterton terraces often take paint well when prepared correctly and last for many years without lifting or cracking.
Exterior Timber
Exterior timber on Cambridge homes takes the full force of the weather. Painted cladding, gates, and garden structures need preparation and quality coatings to hold through wet winters and summer UV.
We sand or strip exterior timber back to sound material, back-prime all faces including cut ends, and apply a flexible exterior finish rated for seasonal movement.
Cambridge properties in Great Shelford and Histon with large timber-clad extensions or outbuildings are a regular part of our exterior painting schedule.
Staining and Varnishing
Staining preserves the natural character of timber while adding colour and protection. It is the right choice for hardwood that has grain worth showing and for softwood that needs subtle colour rather than a full painted finish.
We use penetrating stains on open-grained hardwood and film-forming stains on denser species. Varnish is applied where a high-build film finish is required: typically on interior hardwood floors and exterior joinery that will see water exposure.
The choice between stain and paint is significant. We discuss options on survey and show samples so the decision is made with a clear picture of the result.

Stripping, Restoration and Bespoke Joinery

Stripping and Restoration
Victorian and Edwardian joinery in Cambridge has often been repainted many times. Paint build-up in moulding grooves and around original hardware obscures the detail that makes period woodwork distinctive.
We strip paint using chemical strippers or heat tools depending on the profile complexity and number of coats. Flat sections on skirting and architraves can be sanded back mechanically.
Detailed mouldings and corbels require hand stripping with detail tools to preserve the profile. After stripping, splits are filled, knots are sealed, and any soft or damaged sections are addressed before priming.
Bespoke Joinery
Cambridge homeowners invest in bespoke fitted joinery. Library units in Newnham, fitted wardrobes in Romsey Victorian terraces, and alcove shelving in Cherry Hinton semis are all part of our regular interior wood work.
We paint fitted joinery in place using a brush and fine foam roller combination for flat panels, with hand brushwork on frames and mouldings. Doors, drawers, and shelves are painted separately where possible and rehung after the main structure is done.
Wood Painting Costs in Cambridge
Interior staircase painting including handrail, spindles, and treads on a Victorian Cambridge terrace typically costs between £400 and £900. Full bespoke joinery rooms in Newnham or Romsey run from £600 to £2,000 depending on scale.
Three things drive the price: stripping (paint stripped back to bare wood adds significant preparation time), timber type (hardwoods need different primer systems and more sanding), and scope (painting all the woodwork in a room at once is more efficient than separate visits).

How Our Wood Painting Works
1. Survey
We assess every timber surface, confirm species and existing finish type, check for rot or soft sections, and identify any stripping required. We agree the system and colour before starting.
2. Preparation
Timber is sanded, stripped where needed, filled, and knotted. Resin pockets and knots are sealed with knotting solution before any primer goes on. This step determines how long the finish lasts.
3. Priming
Oil-based primer for bare softwood and most hardwoods. Waterborne primer where specified. Back-priming is done on all exterior cut ends and any newly installed sections.
4. Application
Two finish coats are standard for painted timber. Stained finishes receive the number of coats the product requires for the build level agreed on survey.
5. Inspection
We check every surface in raking light before leaving. Ironmongery is refitted, masking is removed, and we confirm all doors and drawers open freely.
