Staircase Painters in Cambridge

Cambridge Decorators are staircase painters covering Victorian terraces, Edwardian semis, and period homes across Cambridge.
- Balusters and spindles: individual hand-painting
- Handrail and newel posts
- Stair risers and treads
- Understairs area and cupboard interiors
- Staircase walls and stairwell ceilings
Staircase painting is among the most technically demanding interior work in a period property. Balusters, spindles, newel posts, handrails, and stair risers are all different surfaces requiring different preparation and application techniques.
In Cambridge’s Victorian and Edwardian stock (Newnham, Romsey, Cherry Hinton), original turned timber staircases are common. They need the right approach to hold a finish well.

Balusters and Spindles
Original turned timber spindles in Cambridge’s Victorian terraces cannot be painted efficiently with a roller. Each spindle is hand-painted individually, reaching all faces and any carved or turned detail.
The most common mistake with spindle painting is bridging: paint spanning across adjacent spindles and forming webs. We prevent this by painting each spindle completely before moving to the next. Each spindle is sanded lightly between coats.
Handrail and Newel Post
The handrail is the most handled surface in the house and takes the most wear. We strip back any flaking or peeling varnish, prime bare timber, and apply a durable finish coat — typically gloss or hardwearing satin.
In properties where a natural timber look is preferred, we can stain and varnish rather than paint. We advise on appropriate products based on the timber type and the client’s preference.
Stair Risers and Treads
Risers (the vertical faces between each tread) are painted in the same colour as the spindles and balustrade in most Cambridge period staircases. Treads that are painted rather than carpeted need a durable floor paint or hard-wearing enamel.
Where treads are to be painted, we use a specialist floor paint with appropriate hardness for foot traffic. Carpeted treads are masked at the string and riser junction to avoid any overspill.
Understairs Area
The understairs cupboard or alcove is often repainted at the same time as the staircase. It gets heavy use and typically looks dated before the rest of the hallway.
We paint the understairs walls, ceiling, and any shelving as part of the staircase scope. The floor of the cupboard is masked or painted depending on the client’s preference.
Victorian and Edwardian Staircases
Original Victorian and Edwardian staircases in Cambridge are not uniform. Some properties in Newnham and on Grantchester Road have elaborate turned balustrades with decorative newel caps. Others in Romsey and Colville Road have simpler square-profile spindles.
Both need the same underlying approach: thorough preparation, correct primer on bare or stripped timber, and patient hand-painting. We assess the specific staircase during the site visit and quote accordingly.

How Our Staircase Painting Works
1. Site Assessment
We inspect the staircase, note spindle count, handrail condition, riser and tread finish, and any damage or peeling. We advise on whether stripping is warranted before repainting.
2. Preparation
Flaking or peeling areas are sanded or stripped back to sound material. Bare timber is spot-primed. All surfaces receive the appropriate undercoat. Carpet edges on treads are masked carefully.
3. Spindle Painting
Each spindle is painted individually from all sides. The rail-to-spindle and string-to-spindle junctions are cut in by hand. No web-bridging between spindles.
4. Handrail, Newel Post, and Risers
These receive dedicated attention as separate surface types. The handrail top is particularly important — it takes the most contact and must hold its finish.
5. Final Inspection
We check every spindle, all rail junctions, and the riser and tread finishes before leaving. Any drips on treads or floor edges are removed. We walk through the completed staircase with you.

Staircase Painting Costs in Cambridge
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01223 912776 for a precise quote.

Simple Victorian Terrace Staircase
A straight flight with square spindles (Romsey or Cherry Hinton): £400 to £600 for balustrade, handrail, newel, and risers.
Spindle and baluster count is the primary driver. More spindles mean significantly more hand-painting time. Stripping adds time where the existing finish is peeling or has opened and split.
Edwardian Semi with Half-Landing
Turned spindles in Newnham or Histon: £600 to £850, depending on spindle count and condition.
Elaborate turned profiles with multiple faces and grooves take longer to paint than simple square-profile spindles. We assess the specific staircase during the site visit and quote accordingly.
Elaborate Period Staircase
A Newnham villa or Great Shelford detached with decorative newel: £750 to £950 for full balustrade, risers, and stairwell walls.
For a written quote, call 01223 912776 to arrange a site visit. We provide fixed pricing from the first quotation.
What Affects the Price
Three things drive the price: spindle and baluster count, timber condition, and decorative complexity. A staircase where the existing finish is sound needs far less preparation than one where the previous paint is peeling.
For interior painting that extends beyond the staircase, we can quote the full scope together.
