Freshly Plastered Walls

New plaster is highly porous and alkaline. Applying standard emulsion directly to fresh plaster causes the paint to pull, peel, and dry unevenly — the plaster draws liquid out of the paint too quickly before it can form a proper film.

We assess plaster moisture levels before starting. Pink plaster that has not fully dried is not ready to coat. Cambridge extensions and loft rooms are often completed in autumn or winter when drying times extend.

Once the plaster is fully cured to an even pale colour, we apply a sealing coat followed by two finish coats. This is the correct system for any freshly plastered surface.

Sealing Coat Application

A sealing coat is diluted emulsion applied as a thin, penetrating first coat to freshly plastered walls and ceilings. It seals the surface, reduces suction, and creates a stable base for the finish coats.

Getting the dilution right matters. Too little water and the sealing coat does not penetrate adequately. Too much water and it runs, patches, and leaves an uneven base. We use a 70:30 emulsion-to-water ratio as a starting point and adjust for the porosity of the specific plaster.

Application coverage is checked carefully. Missed areas and thin patches become visible through the finish coats as high-suction spots with a different sheen. We do not rush the sealing coat.

First and Second Fix

New build and extension decoration typically runs in two phases. First fix happens before skirting boards, architraves, and kitchen units are installed. Second fix follows installation: skirtings, doors, frames, and any exposed joinery are painted as a final stage.

We coordinate with builders and project managers on Cambridge extension projects. Biotech and university professional households in Trumpington and Histon run tight extension schedules. We confirm dates and stick to them.

The sequence matters: painting walls before units and skirtings go in avoids the masking and cutting-in work that comes from doing it the other way around. We advise on the correct phasing at the outset.

New Builds and Plaster Repairs

New Build and Extension

Cambridge new builds in Trumpington Meadows, CB1, and Sawston are typically handed over in a standard white or magnolia developer finish. Most buyers want something different: specific colours, feature walls, or a higher quality application than the developer’s finish team provides.

We repaint new builds shortly after completion, once the initial plaster has fully cured. We apply a full sealing coat system to any areas of fresh plaster and use a quality emulsion throughout.

Plaster Repair and Preparation

Extensions and loft conversions often combine new surfaces with repaired areas of existing plaster, patched holes, and scrim-taped board junctions. These transitions are where painting problems begin if preparation is not done properly.

Scrim tape at board joints must be properly embedded in plaster or jointing compound before painting. A raised joint line visible through the finished coat is one of the most common complaints on Cambridge extension projects.

We check all board junctions, patch any imperfections in the finish, and ensure transition areas between old and new plaster are level and stable before any coating begins.

Working with Your Build Team

We coordinate directly with builders and project managers on Cambridge extension and new build projects. Tight schedules are common — we confirm dates, stick to them, and advise on the correct phasing so decoration fits around the construction programme without delays.

As part of our interior painting service, we cover all painted surfaces in new builds and extensions. For ceiling-specific work alongside plasterboard projects, see our ceiling painting and wall painters pages.

How It Works

1. Assessment

We check the plaster for moisture, alkalinity, and surface condition. We identify any board junctions, scrim lines, or patched areas that need additional preparation.

2. Repair

Any surface imperfections, raised joints, or unstable areas are addressed before the sealing coat. A small repair done now prevents a large visible problem after finishing.

3. Sealing Coat

Diluted emulsion is applied across all freshly plastered areas. We confirm even coverage, no missed patches, and full surface penetration before moving on.

4. First Finish Coat

Full-strength emulsion is applied once the sealing coat is fully dry. We check for suction variation and re-apply where needed before the second coat.

5. Second Coat and Joinery

The final emulsion coat is followed by woodwork painting if in scope. Skirtings, architraves, and door frames are painted as second fix after units and floor coverings are in place.

6. Handover

We walk through the completed work with the owner, confirm all surfaces are at the specified finish standard, and note any areas for a final touch-up before sign-off.

Plasterboard Painting Costs in Cambridge

Prices below are estimates. Call 01223 912776 for a precise quote.

Drying Stage

Plaster that is not fully cured cannot be coated on the planned date. If a rebook is required due to wet plaster, this adds mobilisation cost. Confirmed drying time at booking stage avoids this.

Scope of Joinery

Second fix decoration covering skirtings, architraves, and doors throughout an extension adds significant time on top of wall and ceiling painting.

Existing Plaster Repairs

Extensions that tie into existing rooms often require patching and blending across old and new plaster. This transition work takes longer than painting a clean new room.
