Timber Fence Panels
Close-board and overlap fence panels are found throughout Cambridge gardens, from Romsey Victorian terraces to Trumpington Meadows new builds. Panels absorb moisture unevenly and need proper preparation before coating.
We clean panels thoroughly before applying any product. Algae, lichen, and green growth are brushed back and treated. Loose knots and open grain are addressed so the coating bonds correctly.
Two coats are standard on bare or recently stripped panels. Previously treated panels in sound condition get a single refresh coat after thorough preparation.
Close-Board Fencing
Close-board fencing, common along the rear boundaries of Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Romsey and Cherry Hinton, presents a tight board-to-board surface. Getting product into the gaps between boards matters.
We apply fence treatment by brush rather than roller on close-board runs. Brush application forces product into the board edges and prevents premature lifting along the joints. Arris rails and posts are included as part of every close-board job.
Garden Gates
Gates are treated as part of every fence job. A freshly stained fence alongside an untreated gate looks unfinished, and gates take more wear than panels.
We sand gates back, check hinges and frames for rot or movement, and apply matching product to the fence treatment. Ironmongery is masked throughout.
Fence Staining
Oil-based fence stains penetrate the timber rather than sitting on the surface. This matters on Cambridge’s older timber fencing, where the wood has dried and expanded through many seasons.
We use penetrating stains on all natural and previously untreated timber. Stain allows the wood to breathe, resists peeling, and does not need stripping between applications. For properties in Newnham and Great Shelford where the garden aesthetic matters, we match stain colour to existing outbuildings and garden structures.
Protective Coatings
Fence panels in exposed positions, particularly on corner plots and larger garden boundaries in Histon and Impington, benefit from a more durable protective coating over the stain.
We apply a clear preservative top coat where the exposure warrants it. This extends the life of the fence treatment and reduces the frequency of retreating.

How Our Fence Painting Works
1. Survey
We walk the full fence run and check every panel, post, and gate. We note areas of rot, loose boards, missing rails, and measure total run length for accurate pricing.
2. Preparation
Panels and posts are brushed down and treated for algae and green growth. Loose knots are filled. Badly rotted boards or rails are flagged for replacement before we begin.
3. First Coat
We apply the first coat by brush, working product into the panel grain and board edges. Posts and arris rails are coated at this stage.
4. Second Coat
Applied after adequate drying time. All gates and capping rails receive the same treatment as the panels.
5. Inspection
We walk the full run and check for missed sections, drips on paving, and full coverage on posts. The site is left tidy before we finish.

Fence Painting Costs in Cambridge
Prices below are estimates. Call 01223 912776 for a precise quote.
Fence painting in Cambridge typically runs between £8 and £18 per linear metre for a standard two-coat treatment, including preparation. A typical 20-metre rear garden boundary comes to between £160 and £360.
Three things drive the price:

Condition
Heavily weathered panels with algae growth take more preparation time. Sound previously treated fencing just needs a clean and a refresh coat.
Fence Type
Close-board fencing takes longer per metre than simple overlap panels due to the additional brush work between boards.
Gates and Access
Properties with multiple garden gates or restricted access along the fence run add time to the job.
Painting fences alongside other exterior timber work is more efficient than separate visits. For full exterior wood treatment, see our exterior painting page.
