Bold Colour Walls
A single deep or saturated colour on one wall creates depth and pulls the eye. A chimney breast, the wall behind a bed, or the main wall of a living room all work well. Cambridge buyers in Newnham, Romsey, and Great Shelford know the Farrow and Ball and Little Greene ranges and know what they want. We execute it cleanly.
Preparation is critical for bold colours. A dark blue or deep green on poorly primed walls will look patchy after two coats. We assess the existing surface, apply the appropriate primer, and build up the colour with the number of coats it needs.
Textured Finishes
Textured paint finishes — limewash effects, clay paints, and tonal wash techniques — are increasingly popular in Cambridge’s period properties. They sit naturally with original lime plaster walls and add tactile warmth that standard emulsion cannot replicate.
We advise on which textured finishes are appropriate for specific wall types. Original lime plaster and modern skim are handled differently. We work with the client’s chosen product or recommend suppliers where helpful.
Geometric Patterns
A geometric pattern — stripes, chevrons, or panel effects — adds structure to a plain wall without the cost of architectural moulding. In open-plan CB1 and Trumpington Meadows spaces, a panelled paint effect creates a period aesthetic on a new-build wall.
We mark out all geometry with precision and use clean masking technique throughout. Measurement, levelling, and masking all come before any paint is opened.

Wallpaper and Alcove Feature Walls

Wallpaper Feature Walls
Wallpaper on a single feature wall is one of the most effective ways to transform a room. A botanical print, a geometric repeat, or a textural linen weave all work well in Cambridge period rooms. We hang feature wall wallpaper as a standalone scope or as part of a broader redecoration.
For wallpapering and lining paper work across a full room, see our wallpapering page.
Alcoves and Chimney Breasts
The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are the defining feature of Cambridge’s Victorian reception rooms in Romsey and Newnham. A deeper tone in the alcoves, or a contrasting colour on the chimney breast face, is one of the most characteristic Cambridge interior moves.
We paint alcoves separately from the main walls and cut in by hand at every junction with cornicing, picture rails, and skirting boards.
How the Feature Wall Process Works
1. Colour and Wall Selection
We discuss which wall in the room would benefit most from a feature treatment. In most rooms the natural choice is clear: the wall facing the door, the chimney breast, or the wall behind the main furniture. We advise where there is genuine doubt.
2. Surface Assessment
The chosen wall is examined for surface condition. Significant cracking, previous filler patches, or a high-gloss existing finish all require specific preparation before a new colour will sit evenly.
3. Preparation
Filling, sanding, and priming as required. For dark or saturated colours, a tinted primer reduces the number of finish coats needed. For wallpaper, the wall is lined if the surface has any variation.
4. Application
Bold paint colours are applied in a minimum of two finish coats with adequate drying time between them. Geometric or panelled work is masked before each stage and unmasked carefully when the coat is firm.
5. Edge Inspection
We inspect all junctions in raking light before leaving: the wall-to-ceiling line, the wall-to-cornicing line, and the transition to adjacent walls. Clean edges are what make a feature wall look intentional rather than accidental.

Feature Wall Painting Costs in Cambridge
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01223 912776 for a precise quote.
A single feature wall typically costs between £200 and £550, depending on wall size, surface condition, and finish type.

Wall Size
A large chimney breast in a double-reception Newnham villa costs more than a standard bedroom wall. More area means more materials and more preparation time.
Surface Condition
Walls needing significant filling or re-priming before a saturated colour will sit evenly add preparation time and affect the final price.
Finish Type
Standard bold emulsion is the most economical option. Wallpaper feature walls are priced separately by paper cost and hanging time. Textured finishes depend on the product specified.
Typical ranges: single feature wall, standard emulsion £200–£350; chimney breast and alcoves £300–£500; wallpaper feature wall from £350. Ask at the site visit.
