Cambridge Ceiling Painting Services
Smooth Ceiling Painting
A well-painted ceiling is invisible: even coverage, clean edges, no roller lines. Achieving this on a large ceiling requires the right primer, the right roller nap, and sufficient drying time between coats.
Victorian and Edwardian ceilings in Romsey and Newnham often show fine hairline cracking. Cambridge’s clay soil causes seasonal ground movement, and plaster reflects it. These cracks are filled and feathered before any topcoat goes on.
Artex and Textured Ceilings
Artex ceilings are common in Cambridge properties from the 1960s through 1990s, particularly in Histon, Impington, and Trumpington’s mid-century stock. Two approaches are available: overpainting in its existing texture, or preparing the ceiling for a smooth skim.
We advise on which approach suits your ceiling. Where the texture is sound and the client prefers to keep it, we apply a stabilising coat and finish with two coats of ceiling paint.
Cornicing and Ceiling Roses
Original cornicing and ceiling roses are features of Cambridge’s better period stock. They add significant character to a room when painted cleanly — and detract from it when overcoated carelessly.
We cut in all decorative plasterwork by hand. No roller work near cornicing or ceiling roses. Where accumulated coats have softened the profile detail, we advise on whether careful stripping would improve the result before repainting.

Water Damage and High Ceilings

Water Damage and Staining
Brown staining on a ceiling indicates past or present water ingress. Paint applied over a stain without a stain-blocking primer will bleed through every coat, sometimes within days.
We identify the source of any staining before quoting. Where the cause is resolved, we apply a shellac-based or specialist stain-blocking primer, allow it to cure, and finish with ceiling paint. The stain is sealed permanently.
High Ceilings
Cambridge’s Victorian and Edwardian properties in Newnham and Cherry Hinton regularly reach ten to twelve foot ceilings. Access at this height requires the right equipment — we use mobile scaffolding towers where ceiling height warrants it.
This allows safe, efficient working and produces a consistent finish across the full surface. Access equipment costs are included in our quote. For full room painting including walls, see our interior painting page.
All Ceiling Types Covered
Whether you have a smooth modern ceiling, original period plasterwork, an Artex finish, or a high-vaulted hallway, we have the preparation knowledge and access equipment to handle the job properly.
We work across Cambridge and surrounding areas. For hallway painting alongside a ceiling project, we can complete both in a single visit.
How Our Ceiling Painting Works
1. Ceiling Assessment
We examine the ceiling closely, noting texture type, crack pattern, staining, previous coats, and the condition of any cornicing or plasterwork. We advise on the appropriate preparation approach before quoting.
2. Crack Filling and Stabilising
Hairline cracks are filled with a fine surface filler and sanded back flush. Larger cracks are cut back, filled in stages, and feathered. Where the plaster is soft or loose, a diluted stabilising solution is applied before priming.
3. Stain Blocking
Any stained areas receive a dedicated stain-blocking primer before the topcoat. Standard primer does not hold stains — this is a non-negotiable step in our process.
4. Paint Application
Ceiling paint is applied with a lambswool roller for smooth ceilings and a thicker pile for textured surfaces. Two coats are standard. Cornicing and roses are hand-cut with an angled brush.
5. Edge Inspection
We inspect the ceiling-to-wall junction in raking light before leaving. Any drips on walls are touched up. We walk through the finished room with you before closing the job.

Ceiling Painting Costs in Cambridge
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01223 912776 for a precise quote.
Ceiling painting typically costs between £150 and £500 per ceiling, depending on size, height, and the presence of period features.
Ceiling Area and Height
A large double-height hallway ceiling in a Newnham villa takes significantly longer than a standard new-build bedroom. Access equipment adds to the cost at significant heights.
Surface Condition
Heavy staining, significant cracking, or multiple previous coats of textured paint all add preparation time. Stained ceilings requiring stain-blocking treatment add £50 to £150 to the base price.
Plasterwork Detail
Ceiling roses and elaborate cornicing require hand-cutting throughout, which adds time relative to a plain smooth ceiling.
Typical ranges: Standard bedroom ceiling up to 10ft: £150–£250. Large reception room with cornicing: £300–£500. For plasterboard painting on new builds, costs are typically lower.
